Platelet Rich Plasma

Injection of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a minimally invasive procedure offered in our office for care of many chronic foot and ankle conditions. PRP is produced from the plasma component of a patient’s own blood, which is very rich in healthy growth factors. These growth factors help to promote healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints, making PRP an excellent modality for use in the foot and ankle.

In particular, our practice has had tremendous success with PRP in the treatment of chronic heel pain, or plantar fasciitis.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE

PRP is produced from a person’s own blood. A sample of blood is obtained in our office, then spun down in a centrifuge machine to separate the blood layers. Once centrifuged, the essential plasma layer is collected. The plasma is then treated and ready for injection.

We ensure our patients are comfortable during the entire procedure. Prior to injection of PRP your doctor will numb the area being treated using local anesthesia. After the injection, patients are fit with a walking boot and must avoid any high impact activity or strenuous exercise. After this short period of rest, your doctor will transition you into a progressive stretching and strengthening program. Patients recieving PRP injections should refrain from any anti-inflammatory medications at least 2 weeks before and after the injection, so as to not impede the healing cycle.
